So the oyster does the only thing it can: it covers the hurt, layer by patient layer, until it becomes something luminous.

Velu Nachiyar’s life followed the same pattern. Born a princess of Ramanathapuram, on the coast where divers have brought pearls up from the Gulf of Mannar for centuries, she learned to ride, to fight with sword and staff, and to speak several languages. She married the king of Sivaganga, and for a while, life was kind.

Then, in 1772, the East India Company’s forces marched on Sivaganga. Her husband was killed, her kingdom was taken, and she fled into exile with her young daughter.

She could have spent those years grieving. Instead, she spent them building: allies first, then an army, then a plan. She even won over Hyder Ali of Mysore, impressing him by speaking to him in his own language.

Eight years later, in 1780, she rode back into Sivaganga at the head of her forces and took her kingdom back. She became one of the first Indian rulers to defeat the British, and she has been remembered as Veeramangai, the brave woman, ever since.

Every woman carries something that hurt: the job that didn’t work out, the plan that fell apart, the year that took more than it gave.
