The woman who ruled much of that coast was Rani Chennabhairadevi, queen of Gersoppa.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eShe ruled for 54 years, longer than any other queen in Indian history. Her ports at Honnavar and Bhatkal shipped spices to Europe and Arabia, and the Portuguese named her the Pepper Queen. They also wanted her trade. In 1559, and again in 1570, they tried to take control of it. Both times, she stopped them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eShe wasn’t the loudest power on the coast. She didn’t need to be. She knew exactly what she held, traded on her own terms, and never gave away more than she chose to. One Portuguese record warned that she had to be handled with great care and diplomacy. And when people fled persecution in Goa, she gave them a home.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eIn 2025, more than four centuries later, India issued a postage stamp in her honour.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eNot every occasion is a wedding or a party.
